787 is one of the two telephone area codes serving Puerto Rico. The 787 area code was created during a split from the original (809) area code. The split was done on or around March 1996. The 939 area code was created as an overlay in 2001.
When in Puerto Rico, the full area code + seven digit phone number must be dialed.

Due to a shortage of 787-related numbers that was a result of increased cell phone and modem usage on the island, 939 was created as an overlay for the original 787 area code. Most telephone numbers in Puerto Rico that have this area code tend to be wireless phones.
As an overlay, the area code was added sometime around September 2001. The 939 area code was created following 787's split from the legacy regional 809 area code.
When in Puerto Rico, the full area code + seven digit phone number must be dialed.

In the episode titled "A Tale of Two Springfields" from the long-running television series, "The Simpsons", 939 is one of two area codes (the other being 636) assigned to the fictional town of Springfield.
